Well Depth & Water Table
Depth is the biggest single cost driver — you pay by the foot, and a deep water table means more drilling, casing, and a stronger pump. Also the main source of quote uncertainty.
Local Geology
Soft soil and sand drill quickly and cheaply; hard rock like granite or basalt is slow and chews through bits. The same depth can cost two to three times more in hard rock.
Casing Material & Diameter
The casing lines the borehole to keep it stable and clean. PVC is cheaper; steel costs more but is required in some ground and at depth. Wider, deeper wells use more casing.
Pump Type, Size & Depth
A submersible pump sized for your depth and household demand is what makes the well usable. Right-sizing matters — the wrong pump short-cycles and fails early.
Site Access & Permits
The rig needs to reach the drilling spot — tight, remote, or sloped sites add access surcharges. Most states require a permit, and fees and inspections add to the total.
Water Treatment
Once the well is in, the water gets tested. Iron, arsenic, hardness, or bacteria mean filtration or softening — a separate line item on top of the drilling cost.

Most residential wells are 100 to 300 feet deep, but the right depth depends entirely on your local water table — there’s no universal number. In areas with a deep water table or hard rock, wells can run 300 to 500 feet or more.
A drilled well is the deepest, most common, and most reliable — it reaches deep, protected aquifers. A bored well is shallow and wide, suited to a high water table. A driven well is a shallow sand point driven into loose soil — cheapest, but limited to shallow water and low yield.
A properly built well can last 30 to 50 years or more — the borehole and casing are long-term infrastructure. The submersible pump is the part that wears out, typically lasting 8 to 15 years, so plan on at least one pump replacement over the life of the well.
