- Never mix bleach with any other cleaner, acid, or ammonia — it makes toxic gas. Bleach only.
- Wear goggles and rubber gloves; work in a ventilated spot.
- Turn the pump breaker OFF before you open the well cap.
- Bypass or remove any reverse-osmosis membrane and carbon filter, and set the water softener to bypass — bleach destroys them.
- Don't flush more than ~100 gallons of chlorinated water into a septic system; send the rest outdoors, away from plants.
- Store a day of drinking water first — you can't use the taps during the 12–24 hour soak.

How long, and what next
Run each indoor and outdoor tap until you smell chlorine, then shut them off. Run a garden hose back into the well casing to mix it too.
Leave the chlorinated water standing in the well and pipes overnight. Don't run any water during this soak.
Run an outside hose to waste — away from your septic field, plants, and any waterway — until the chlorine smell is gone, then clear the indoor taps.
Re-sample for total coliform and E. coli. If it's still positive, the contamination has a source a pro needs to find.
